E.T.O. also gives you access to selected pre-release versions so you can get an early start experimenting with new enhancements to Apple’s tools and systems.
-- WHAT IS E.T.O.?
E.T.O. is the most complete and comprehensive collection of Apple Development Tools ever combined in one package. E.T.O. contains of all of the most widely used Apple Development Tools, on a CD-ROM, with hardcopy final documentation. And to help you keep up to date with the latest versions E.T.O. is sold as a quarterly subscription.
-- WHAT’S HERE?
E.T.O. includes:
• MPW Development Environment • MacApp application framework
E.T.O. contains pre-final versions of software that are:
• Unsupported by Apple
• Experimental
• NOT recommended for use in your final builds
• NOT guaranteed to contain the same feature set as the final release
• To be used at your own risk
E.T.O. contains selected pre-final versions (e.g. MPW 3.2 EXP1, MacApp’s “Experimental enhancements” and “Unsupported Samples”, C++ 3.1b4, MacsBug 6.2a4, ResEdit 2.0b2, etc.) that are included only for your early examination and experimentation.
They are NOT SUPPORTED BY APPLE. Apple recommends that you DO NOT USE THEM for creating finished builds of your software. Apple makes no promises that all features found in the pre-final versions will remain in the ultimate final versions. You should USE ALL PRECAUTIONS when working with these pre-final versions.
-- HOW E.T.O. IS ORGANIZED.
E.T.O. is arranged into two main parts. “Essentials” and “Tools & Objects”.
ESSENTIALS
The largest part of Essentials is the collection of information called “Developer Essentials” that also comes as a single CD-ROM that is bundled with the develop Technical Journal. Developer Essentials is also included as part of other Apple Developer Group CD-ROMs such as the MPW and MacApp CD-ROMs.
Developer Essentials is a collection of the tools and information that Apple feels EVERY developer should have regardless of what development environment you use or what Apple machine you work with.
Developer Essentials includes electronic versions of Apple’s developer documentation such as SpInside Macintosh, DTS Technical Notes, DTS’s common Q&As, and other electronic versions from the Apple Technical Library. Developer Essentials also includes versions of U.S. and international Macintosh system software and HyperCard. It also has the complete set of Mac DTS Sample Code.
Also in the E.T.O. “Essentials” folder is “411”. “411” is an integrated, on-line information tool for use with MPW and Mouser (part of MacApp). This current version of “411” contains all the Macintosh toolbox “header” information and all the text of Inside Macintosh volumes 1 - 5.
Finally, the “Essentials” folder on E.T.O. #1 contains a bonus collection of information about MacApp and C++. The MacApp Reference and C++ AppleLink Messages folders contain a collection of messages from the MacApp forums on AppleLink with discussion about many common questions and challenges involved in working with this application framework.
TOOLS & OBJECTS
The “Tools & Objects” folder on E.T.O. contains MPW, MacApp, C++, and utilities like ResEdit, MacsBug and SADE. Additionally the folders for each of these contains a pre-release version of the product that you can experiment with and try its new features and capabilities. The MPW folder also contains an older version (v. 3.0) of MPW for those who need it.
Each folder in Tools & Objects contains a readme file with more information about its contents.
-- HOW TO FIND THINGS ON E.T.O.
E.T.O. is arranged so that its contents can be located and used easily with just the use of the Finder™. We have also included a simple, but powerful, database of the filenames and paths to every file and folder on E.T.O. disc. This is contained in the program QuickFile that is located on the top level of the E.T.O. #1 disc.
To locate a file, open the database by double-clicking on either the QuickFile or “ETO Index” icons. Then type a part of the name of the thing you want into the Find: field and hit Return. QuickFile will show you the first card that contains the fragment you asked for with the pathname to that file. Hit Return repeatedly to see other cards that contain the fragment you asked for.
You can do boolean “AND” searches by typing in two or more requests into the Find: field separated with spaces. Note that the E.T.O. QuickFile data file is very large and you may not be able to open it on some Macs with limited memory.
QuickFile is a public domain program that was written by Bill Atkinson in 1984.
-- INSTALLER FOLDER
The Tools & Objects folder also contains a folder called Installation Folder that contains a special installation programs for placing a working copy of the MPW development suite on your hard disk. You will need to manually move this Installation Folder to your hard disk then run the install program that it contains. It will then prompt you for the information it needs, such as, which parts of E.T.O. you want to install.
-- RELEASE NOTES
Each E.T.O. quarterly mailing comes with extensive release notes (on paper) about the changes to the products since the time that the manuals were written. Refer to these notes for information specific to each E.T.O. component product.
In some cases, the word processing files (usually in MS Word 4.0 format) for the release notes are included on the E.T.O. disc.
-- SITE LICENSE
E.T.O. is a SINGLE USER product. Like any single user product you may not use its content on more than one machine at a time. Each time you receive a new E.T.O. quarterly mailing disc you are obligated to archive or destroy all previous E.T.O. CD-ROMs. You may not “pass along” the old CD to another user. See the software license on the CD-ROM case and the order form agreement for specific details of these limitations.
A site license for E.T.O. can be purchased. For details on purchasing such a license contact Apple Computer Software Licensing, 20525 Mariani Avenue, MS 38-I, Cupertino, Ca 95014.
Note: Due to restrictions in our license with AT&T, C++ cannot be included in any site license of E.T.O.
-- FUTURE VERSIONS OF E.T.O.
The E.T.O. quarterly mailing will be sent to subscribers automatically. It will contain all the new versions of the E.T.O. products, some new pre-release versions, updated versions of the “Essential” information and even more.
